The Interview:
1. First off, congratulations on the big novel sale! Give us the elevator pitch. What’s your book about?
Okay, but this isn’t an elevator going up just one story, is it? Let’s start in the lobby and go to…say…the fourth floor.
It’s about this high school student, Clay Jensen, who comes home from school to find an anonymous package full of cassette tapes resting on his doorstep. He finds a tape player, drops in the first tape, presses play, and out comes the voice of Hannah Baker–his classmate and crush–who committed suicide two weeks earlier. She says there are thirteen reasons why she ended her life; each side of each tape explaining one of those reasons. And if you received the package of tapes, you’re one of the reasons why.
2. Most new novelists have an interesting story to tell about their journey to publication. What’s yours? Did you use an agent? Make sure to tell us about the day you found out you’d sold a book.
It took me about twelve years to sell my first book, but that was twelve years of trying to write humorous books for younger children.
Thirteen Reasons Why was the first non-humorous book I attempted, as well as my first book for teens. But the entire time I was working on it, it felt like such a natural fit. I tried not to kick myself too many times for not exploring this market earlier.
After I finished the manuscript, I found an agent…which was a good move because it ended up selling in a three-house auction. The first person I told when my agent informed me of the first two offers (which came on the same day) was my wife. I took her out to our wedding spot, which made it a very beautiful moment for both of us. In fact, you can see photos of it on my blog. Then we went and bought three bouquetes of flowers to surprise my parents and my two writing partners (and co-bloggers). It was an amazing experience because all of them were just as emotional as me.
3. Do you have another book in the pipeline? What are you working on now?
I’m working on my next novel for teens, which will be a little less heavy. And then I’d like to rework some of my humorous manuscripts, bringing their quality of writing up to where I am now. I’d love to see some of the books out there!
4. What’s your writing process like? Morning writer, night writer, or something in between?
I usually brainstorm late at night while my wife sleeps. She’s absolutely wonderful about it. Since we both have to wake up at the same time, she lets me stay in bed for a few more minutes while she makes the coffee. But when I’m actually writing, I go to a coffee shop right after work (I work at a public library) and sometimes stay there until they close.
5. There seems to be an unusually high percentage of writers who own cats. Here at the The First Book, we’re doing a study to find out if there’s a direct relationship between writing success and cat ownership. Do you own a cat? If so, tell us about him or her. If not, tell us what you have against cats.
Cats make my eyes water and my nose run. I’m extremely allergic to them, so that’s why I don’t have any. (Although, even without allergies, I’m not sure I’d own a cat. But I would never admit that publicly because cat people are so defensive!)

I ordered your book from amazon.com. Can’t wait to read it! I write younger and humorous and am really ready to read something heavier.
This sounds terrific…I just ordered it and can’t wait to read it!

Congratulations on your first book! It’s so cool to hear that you found a genre that “fits” you. So many of us wander in the writing ether trying out everything. Your book sounds great.
Congratz!

My 7th grader brought this book home from his school’s library. Since the beginning of the school year he has been sharing his library books with me which has proven to help keep the lines of communication open. With this particular book, I am SO glad that I had read ahead of where he was at! My initial reaction to the subject of teen suicide and placing the blame on others should have been enough to raise a red flag, but it was the sexually explicit content that now has me meeting with the school districts administrators to have this book REMOVED FROM THE ENTIRE DISTRICT’S (AND SURROUNDING DISTRICT’S) LIBRARIES!! THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT A BOOK THAT NEEDS TO BE READ BY MINORS!!
I read teh book, and while ti kept me reading and provided insight as to how people about to commit suicide feel, I thought that some of the reasons were slightly ridiculous. The first few, especially, seem like a normal High School experience (and I would know, because I’m a high schooler). I feel like Hannah should have been stronger, and jsut gotten up and changed the situation she was face with. She really acts the helpless damsel, ESPECIALLY in the 12th reason-story. So, while a good read, and I encourage it, I wouldn’t put Hannah as a heroine of anything.
Have you ever thought of turning this novel into a movie?
this would b a good movie!
hey i really liked this book a bought it close to a year ago and the very day i got it i read it all in one night kinda like the way he stayed up all night listening to the tapes i thought it was a really great book showing how the way bullys and just mean people can effect others i really thurally enjoyed this book
My sister gave me this book for Christmas. I just now got around to reading but as soon as i picked it up i couldn’t put it back down, i finished reading it in a little more then 5 hours. it was amazing.

this book is my absolute favorite!
they should make a movie based off of it!
Amazing book! I love it!
I think Jay is an amazing writer. I told my friends about the book, and most of them read it. We all loved it, and we hope that Jay writes more books. He’s very talented!
xo;
This book was absolutely amazing. It opene my eyes to so many things. It started out just being a project for school but as I started reading the bok I forgot about the project and just really focussed on the content. It was amazing. Everything was just displayed in such a great format. I even got some of my friends to read the book and after returning my book to me they went out and bought their own copy and we are reading it for the 3rd and 4th time now. If you haven’t read it I strongly recommend taht you do!
I have been reading the book. I am somewhat disturbed by some of it’s contents…but let the record show i cannot put it down. it is an AMAZING book. My mom was told about it by a friend who knew i loved to read and thought that it would be good to recommend. I am glad she did. But i just hope that the message i will find when i do finish it will be that Hannah made some bad choices. Especially killing herself. When i read the book my mom makes sure to tell me not to kill myself…beleive me if i thought it was okay…i would have thought about that option already. Going your whole life being the center of one cruel joke after the next can really scar you for life. I beleive it is true that for every hurtful thing said you need 10 good things said to rebuild your confidence to where it was before that comment.
Please don’t be like Justin and start rumors or like Bryce and take advantage of someone becuase of what you heard. If you r a jerk…you just might find yourself listening to 13 tapes.
Jay,
I have a student who is an amazing writer. Here is her latest dilemma…she struggles with coming up with an ending to her stories. Suggestions?
I love this book
it is really amazing
it is one of the best books I have read
This should definitely be made into a movie, it is such a good book!!
